![]() ![]() They even undid the idea that he would want to kill Quark to get ahead in business and made him a Ferengi who was deeply loyal to his family. Rom clearly went from being supposed to be a complete moron and changed into a character who was an incredibly smart engineer, but simply a poor businessman. He could've been the chief engineer of a starship if he'd had the opportunity. Remind me to get rid of him tomorrow.Ĭompare that to season 3's "Heart of Stone," where Nog says this Odo: You claimed Rom fixed your replicators? Quark: There's an old Ferengi saying: "Never ask when you can take". More than this, I consider the biggest retcon as this one from season 1's '"Babel " ![]() They definitely did a rethink on Rom as a character. But once he learned that, with one or two exceptions, he treated his brother much better, partly for the purposes of survival, and partly out of realization that his brother had depths he hadn't realized. So to apply those rules, Quark's more surprised that Rom had the moxie to actually try to kill him he honestly didn't think Rom had that much spine in him. Quark is a bad Ferengi by Ferengi standards, for reasons that make him a lovable rogue to us. Contrast that with his cousin Gaila, who makes a speech in support of selling weapons by saying (paraphrasing, barely) "Do you think anyone would care if one of those stars winked out forever?" Gaila is a good Ferengi by Ferengi standards, and that is what makes him a bad person. For Quark, profit is great and all, but it's not worth dying for, let alone killing for.Īnd that makes him terrible by Ferengi standards. and he completely falls apart and can't make decisions once he knows that. It's a bit of a pity that his character was so well-established in "Move Along Home", which is otherwise a terrible episode, but the one scene that is great in that episode is Quark's realization that he's playing with real lives of people he knows in the game. Quark is a shrewd business guy, but he's always on the cusp because at core, he has a heart and lacks a (literally) killer instinct. And even more specifically, what makes them bad Ferengi makes them admirable to us. ![]() Yeah, that's something people forget: the way that they made Quark's family a commentary on Ferengi culture is by making them all bad Ferengi. Think for yourself: Topics that boil down to "Should I watch.", "Will I like.", "Change my view on.", "Does anyone else.", or "Tell me what to think" are not contributing anything to the community.Ĭlick here for the full & detailed guidelines Upcoming Episodes: Date Meta: Send a modmail instead of making public posts or comments about: other users of this subreddit, the rules or moderators, the community at large or other subreddits, downvotes/upvotes.Ĩ.
